English
& Speech
SPC & SPR
The English I course
provides an overview of world literature combined with extensive practice
in writing, emphasizing grammar, usage and vocabulary skills to prepare
the student to achieve success in high school.
The English II course will include both world
literature and writing. The literature study will be done with a focus on
genre, with emphasis on understanding elements that enhance appreciation
of short stories, nonfiction, legends, drama, poetry and novels.
In the Speech SPC & SPR both verbal and nonverbal
means of communication are explored. Students learn the applied skills of
interviewing, discussion, and public speaking, in an interpersonal context
consisting of perception, language, self-awareness, and listening. Much
emphasis is placed on critical thinking, feed-back, listening skills,
critical use of oral symbols, nonverbal communication, and adjustment to
the speaking situation itself. Students will participate in a mock job
interview.
The English III course is designed for the
college bound student within a professionals career pathway. The
literature study will be done in historical sequence beginning with the
Pilgrims and continuing through modern writers. Types of literature
studied will include nonfiction, the short story, poetry, drama and the
novel. Time permitting, two novels will be read. Skills in analyzing
literature and the elements of fiction will be emphasized.

World History
SPC & SPR
This course approaches the world’s people, places and events
from a cultural, economics, geographical, political, and historical perspective.
Studies will begin with the Stone Age and progress to current times. During the
progress of this course cultures and countries from all continents of the world
will be covered. |
American
History SPC & SPR
The major emphasis will be on the U.S. from
Reconstruction through the 21st Century. It will include the study of the
world wars form the American perspective, the Roaring 20’s, the Depression
of the 30’s, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, Watergate and life in the
80’s and 90’s. Throughout this study the student will learn how
government, economics activity and geography have played an important role
in the shaping of our country’s past and present. |
Economics
SPC & SPR
This course will study how people attempt
to utilize scare resources to satisfy unlimited wants. Topics studied will
include supply and demand, production and productivity, money and
financial institutions, economic stability, international trade, and the
influence of the government on the free enterprise system. |
Government
SPC & SPR
This course emphasizes the
responsibilities of the citizens in a democracy. The course content
includes why and how our government was created, the study of the three
branches of the national government, and the examination of state and
local government. Students will obtain first hand knowledge of their civil
liberties and fundamental freedoms. |
Math
SPC & SPR
The Math I course provides
instruction and practice in basic concepts (adding, subtracting,
multiplying, dividing, measurement, percents, statistics and graphs) and
it introduces topics such as Beginning Algebra and Geometry, probability,
and logical reasoning. Emphasis is placed upon problem solving, daily
review of previously taught concepts, and the importance of mathematics in
daily life and work in the “real world”.
The Math II course is designed to help students
make the transition from elementary mathematics to Algebra and to more
abstract thinking. Pre-Algebra provides students with pre-requisite
skills, concepts and problems solving techniques needed to work through
problems individually or in small group endeavors to be successful in
Algebra. This class reviews elementary math skills like addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and
decimals and then moves to Algebra concepts of integers, equations and
number theory. |
Science
SP
Science I SP includes
Physical Science and Earth Science. The Physical Science course is
designed to develop the individual’s background in physical science.
Topics of discussion will include the scientific method, the periodic
table, the structure of matter, motion and forces, work and energy, heat
and temperature, and sound and light.
The Earth Science course for freshmen is a one semester course that is
designed to develop the individual’s background in earth science. Topics
of discussion will include an introduction to science, forces that shape
the earth, space, and natural resource conservation.
Science II Sp is General Biology and is for
students who wish to have a basic background in biology that will cover
state standards not previously learned in General Science. The primary
focus of the course will cover ecological relationships, cell biology,
genetics, evolution, and the classification and general survey of the
kingdoms of life. The introduction to laboratory practices will be
emphasized.

"SIM" Word I.D. Reading Program
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Recommendation of special education teacher
This course is designed to help boost students’ ability to read and
recognize longer, multi-syllable words found in high school reading
materials. This class will teach students to quickly identify unknown
words while reading. |
Remedial Reading
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
This class is designed for high school students who are non-readers and
for students who are reading significantly below grade level. Phonemic
awareness, word study, reading and
comprehension strategies, and spelling are combined to build the
foundation for improved reading skills. Direct instruction and
multi-sensory strategies are used to accommodate one-on-one learning and a
variety of learning styles. The content is age appropriate, with
contemporary
young adult literature selections. |
Academic Enhancement
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Recommendation of special education teacher
Academic Enhancement is designed to aid students in their regular
education classes. Emphasis is on the development of good study habits as
well as organizational skills. Each student will receive assistance with
homework and test preparation. |
