American History
Required in 10th Gr., 2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit

The major emphasis will be on the U.S. from Reconstruction through the 21st Century. It will include the study of the world wars form the American perspective, the Roaring 20’s, the Depression of the 30’s, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, Watergate and life in the 80’s and 90’s. Throughout this study the student will learn how government, economics activity and geography have played an important role in the shaping of our country’s past and present.

Junior Achievement
Required in 12th Gr., one trimester long, 1/2 credit

With the support of volunteer consultants from the local business community, the JA Company Program provides basic economic education for high school student’s 10-12 grades. By
organizing and operating an actual business enterprise, students not only learn how businesses function, they also learn about the structure of the U. S. free enterprise system and the benefits it provides. Additional JA programs will be incorporated in the class to help young people appreciate and better understand the role of business in our society. (This class does not replace the required Economics course for seniors which also incorporates some JA materials.)

Economics
Required in 12th Gr., one trimester long, 1/2 credit

This course will study how people attempt to utilize scare resources to satisfy unlimited wants. Topics studied will include supply and demand, production and productivity, money and financial institutions, economic stability, international trade, and the influence of the government on the free enterprise system.

Current Geography
One trimester long, 1/2 credit

Current Geography brings together two vitally important aspects of the Social Studies curriculum. First, the course will chronicle and interpret international, national, state and local news events and how they impact on the course of human affairs. Secondly, by using a regional geographic approach, students will gain an appreciation for the economic, cultural and political conditions that exist around the world.

The Current Geography approach will fuse together the what with the where.

World History & Geography
Required in 11th Gr., 2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit

This course approaches the world’s people, places and events from a cultural, economics, geographical, political, and historical perspective. Studies will begin with the Stone Age and progress to current times. During the progress of this course cultures and countries from all continents of the world will be covered.

Government
Required in 12th Gr., One trimester long, 1/2 credit

This course emphasizes the responsibilities of the citizens in a democracy. The course content includes why and how our government was created, the study of the three branches of the national government, and the examination of state and local government. Students will obtain first hand knowledge of their civil liberties and fundamental freedoms.

Michigan History
One trimester long, 1/2 credit

This course deals with Michigan History from the Indian era to the present day. Included will be studies of the first Indian settlements, French period, French and Indian War, American entry, statehood, Civil War, lumbering, and Great Lakes shipping. This course will also deal with Michigan during the Twentieth Century. Special emphasis will be placed on changing agriculture, industrialization and recreation.

Psychology
One trimester long, 1/2 credit

This course involves many of the basic introductory concepts of psychology. Units studied include psychology defined, psychological methods, human development, biological influences on behavior, understanding personality, measuring personality, intelligence, classical and operant conditioning, learning, thinking, creativity, psychological disturbances, and facing frustration and conflict.

The class is designed for the student who has a sincere desire to gain a better understanding of self and human relationships. A willingness to participate honestly and intelligently in discussion is essential.

Sociology
One trimester long, 1/2 credit

This is an introductory course in the science of sociology. Instruction will include such areas as group behavior, the individual role in group-origins, variations, values, and social control of social problems (race, population, crime, environmental pollution).

The class is designed for the student who has a sincere desire to gain a better understanding of self and human relationships. A willingness to participate honestly and intelligently in discussion is essential.
