PARENT TIPS
Parents have the greatest opportunity for building their children’s self-esteem. A child who feels good about himself or herself is more likely to be successful at school and in life. Here are some tips of building your child’s self-esteem:
Praise your child often. Offer praise in front of other family members and friends.
Include your child in family discussions. Listen to what your child has to say and show respect for his or her thoughts and opinions.
Do not compare your child to other children. Accept your child’s short comings and give positive recognition for his or her strengths.
Tell your child you love him or her.
Let your child know that you understand his or her feelings.
Let your child know that you will be there for him or her whenever your child has a problem or worry.
Leave notes with special messages for your child----when you leave the house, in your child’s lunch bag or under his or her pillow.
Around Thanksgiving time and throughout the year, thank your child for being so special.

While walking on the beach one night I noticed a man in the distance. As we drew closer I noticed that he would bend down, pick up something and throw it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things into the ocean.
As I approached him, I noticed it was starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water.
“Good evening, what are you doing?”
“I’m throwing starfish back into the ocean. Due to low tide all of these star fish have been washed onto the shore. If I don’t throw them back into the ocean, they will die of lack of oxygen.”
“I understand, but there must be thousands of starfish on the beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. You realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast. You can’t possibly make a difference.”
The old man looked at the starfish, threw it back into the water, then replied, "I made a difference to that one, didn't I?"
