BUSINESS DEPARTMENT

 

Students who enroll in business classes can look forward to having the skills employers are seeking. Upon completion of the business curriculum, students could look forward to being employed in the following areas: Office Assistant, Office Specialist, Medical/ Legal Specialist, Information Processing Assistant/Specialist, Administrative Assistant, Data Assistant, Data Specialist, Banking Specialist, Computer Aided Design, Computer Assistant, Graphic Arts and Business Management.

Computer I Introduction to Computers
One trimester long, 1/2 credit

Computer I is a beginning class. It is available to students in grades 9-12. This is a prerequisite to Computers II. Basic word processing skills are emphasized. Students will continue to work on their keyboarding skills, learn formatting standards for documents such as: business letters, personal business letters, memos, unbound reports, tables, and outlines. This class does not satisfy a math requirement.

Computer II Manipulation and Presentation Software (M.A.P.S.)
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Computer I

A brief review of word processing skills will be given. Students will continue working on their computer skills by learning and using MS PowerPoint, spreadsheet applications, database application, internet basics, and desktop publishing. Students will create their basic portfolio notebook that will be used throughout high school to demonstrate their work in all curricular areas. This class does not satisfy a math requirement.

Internet & Web Essentials
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
9th - 12th Grades

Prerequisite: Computer I

This is a project driven course designed to help students appropriately and effectively use the Internet. Students will learn such things as: search engines, trip planning tools, different research strategies, e-mail, Internet terminology, bookmark management, browsers, and
distinguishing sources. Time will also be spent identifying ethical issues (i.e., plagiarism, illegal downloading, fair use and copyright guidelines) as they relate to the Internet and technology.

General Business
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit

The main purpose of General Business is to help each student become an intelligent consumer. The student will study the following: our capitalistic system; insurance needs; banking -- (checking, savings and loans); credit, housing, careers; and consumer protection.

Accounting
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit

This class deals with the keeping of records for a small business. A study is made of the complete business cycle. Topics like payroll, depreciation, and interest are also covered.

Business and Accounting (BAT I)
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit
Prerequisite: Computer II

Business and Technology is an introductory course covering business/computer core applications. Emphasis will be on computer literacy, word processing, database, and spreadsheet functions. The following soft skills will also be introduced: telephone skills, communication skills (oral & verbal), problem solving skills and career planning. Software covered includes: Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint). Students will also be introduced to technology in the form of desktop publishing, scanner and digital camera usage. Students in this class are encouraged to get involved in Business Professionals of America. Students may also get credit on the Office Information Systems Program (Associate’s Degree) at Mid-Michigan Community College by taking this class and passing a competency test at MMCC.

Management Support
(JUNIORS & SENIORS)
Open to 11th Gr. students and  fulfills the graduation computer literacy requirement
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit
 

Management Support is an advanced course utilizing all types of business skills. Emphasis is on office skills, telephone procedures, workflow and office design, records management, all types of business forms, tables, reports, time management skills, business math, and employability skills. Using PowerPoint, students will create and offer presentations on various business topics. Students are also encouraged to get involved in Business Professionals of America. By enrolling in this program, it is possible to waive up to nine credit hours of the Office Information Systems Program (Associate’s Degree) at Mid-Michigan Community College.
